- I need help with a newly purchased USR 28.8 "True V.34 with V.FC -- NOW with
- 33.6 Kbps data" modem. I've asked for help from U.S. Robotics Technical
- Support and received no response in a number of days. I looked through
- all of their FAQs to no avail. I'm getting desperate. Any help appreciated.
-
- On 12/10/95 I purchased a USRobotics Sportster 28.8 external modem. I used
- this for a few weeks with a terminal emulation package (WRQ Reflection) to
- log on to a shell account with my internet service provider (Northwest
- Nexus). The modem worked fine.
-
- On 12/30/95 I switched from a shell account to a SLIP account using WRQ
- Reflection's SLIP software. I am able to make SLIP connections with no
- problem and consistently get connected at 28.8. I can use telnet just
- fine. However, I cannot download medium to large files using ftp, and I
- cannot use the web browser. In both cases I have the same symptom: While
- data is being downloaded to the PC, the phone connection stays up, but the
- PC stops receiving data.
-
- To trouble-shoot this problem, before running the browser, I successfully
- pinged the DNS server. After I got into the state where the browser no
- longer received data, I tried pinging the DNS server again and got no
- response. While trying Ping, I noticed that the send-data light on the
- modem flickered, but the receive-data light never flickered. At one point
- I put a break-out box on the line betweent the PC and the modem. When I
- got into this state, the modem control lines looked normal (RTS and CTS
- were both high -- on).
-
- I then tried fiddling with the configuration. I use AT&F1 as the
- initialization string, and the SLIP software is set to use CTS/RTS flow
- control. I varied the DTE speed from 115.6 to 38.4. I used the &N8 command
- to lower the DCE speed to 14.4. I tried this over several days using
- several different phone numbers (and modems). (Northwest Nexus uses
- USRobotics 28.8 modems -- I don't know the model.)
-
- I finally tried swapping modems. I used a Practical Peripherals
- PM14400FXMT. With this modem, I experienced no problem. I then tried a
- Hayes Smartmodem Optima 28.8 V.34/V.FC. I experienced no problem with this
- modem.
-
- Some configuration data:
-
- Practical Peripherals: Initialization String = AT&F1 DTE speed = 57,600
- Hayes: Initialization String = AT&F DTE speed = 115,200
-
- I have a Pentium 90 PC running Windows 3.1.
-
- The USR ATI7 data:
- Configuration Profile...
-
- Product type US/Canada External
- Options V32bis,V.FC,V.34+
- Fax Options Class 1/Class 2.0
- Clock Freq 92.0Mhz
- Eprom 256k
- Ram 64k
-
- EPROM date 10/18/95
- DSP date 10/18/95
-
- EPROM rev 1.1
- DSP rev 1.1
-
- Armed with this data, I sent an inquiry to the Northwest Nexus tech
- support. Their reply:
-
- It does appear that you do have a modem problem. It ironic that the
- USR is the one giving you grief as that is the type of modem you are
- connecting to on our end. We have had our share of problems with USR
- Sportster and it is quite possible that you have a defective modem. Your
- INIT string looks fine. You might try a lower DTE speed just see if it
- helps. Your next step would be to return the modem for a replacement as
- I am sure it is still under warranty.
-
- So, I returned the modem to the dealer(Doppler), who graciously swapped it
- for another Sportster. Unfortunately, I have exactly the same problem with
- the new modem.
